WNCC launched its theme of the year 2023/2024 NUGGETS OF WISDOM FROM PROVERBS at the commencement service that took place on the 20th of September.
The Speaker at the event, Mr. Innocent Ogbu taught on THE EXPOSITION OF THE MEANING OF PROVERBS FOR PROPER APPLICATION AND PROFITTING IN COMTEMPORARY TIMES.
Proverbs are of varied kinds – synonymous, antithetical, synthetic, integral, parabolic and comparative; one other way in which the proverbs of King Solomon (Cf. Prov. 10.1-22.16; 25.1-29.29) may be classified into are always true, sometimes true and hardly true because proverbs only state general truths not absolutes. In other words, proverbs no doubt are statements of facts of sayings of wisdom however that does not establish them to be absolutes and the fact that some positive may not be absolute for here and now does not in any way suggest or teach us to reframe from keeping up with them, also the fact that some negative proverbs may appear to be true on the surface does not in any way suggest or teach us to practice them.
To profit abundantly through correct application of proverbs and to avoid the errors of reading proverbs in an isolated and abstract manner; apart from understanding the meaning and purpose of proverbs, individual proverbs must be interpreted from their canonical setting linking appropriately the two sections observed when structuring the book of proverbs and relating the theology of the book of proverbs to the theology of the New Testament. Being faced with the same question today as the ancient Israelites: will we dwell with wisdom or with folly? This school year, we are resolved to always remember Moses’ charge and encouragement to aid us in answering this very important question of life whether to dwell with wisdom or with folly; he said,
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land… (Deut. 30.19-20).
